Paddy Power 2004 Pretax Profits Up By 57%

Irish betting group Paddy Power has posted a 57& increase in full-year pretax profits, matching expectations, fuelled by a run of very favourable sporting and racing results in the first six months of 2004.

Martin Pipe decides against appeal

Trainer Martin Pipe and jockey Jamie Moore have decided not to appeal against the Jockey Club's punishment. Pipe was fined £3,000 while Moore was suspended for 21 days over the running and riding of Celtic Son last October.

A statement on Pipe's website said they would have appealed had it not been so close to the Cheltenham Festival.

All-Weather Horse Racing at Newbury!

Newbury Racecourse announced it's plans today for a new all-weather track. The new racecourse will support five and six-furlong straight races and have a chute for races over seven furlongs and a mile. The cost of the project is believed to be around £4.5m.

Racing UK launching channel on NTL

Subscription based horse racing channel Racing UK will launch on ntl's digital cable service today!

The first two weeks of broadcasts will be unencrypted to give you a chance to sample the service.

Redevelopment of Musselburgh Racecourse

Musselburgh Racecourse owners want to treble the number of horse racing meetings held at Musselburgh by creating a £3m floodlit all-weather track for evening races during the winter months.

O'Brien stable jockey, Spencer, Resigns!

Jamie Spencer, top Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien's stable jockey, has resigned after one season.
One of the best jobs in horse racing sounds like the most stressful ;)

Spencer won his fair share of races, just not in major events – O'Brien's only managed three Group One winners in 2004, compared with nine in 2003, 19 in 2002 and a world record 23 in 2001.
